This suburb, now mainly populated by Albanians, is not exactly a tourist mecca. Yet this is where Skopje's human settlement began in prehistoric times. The on-site reconstruction of a Neolithic village is interesting, but little known to the locals... and to the staff of the National Museum of Archaeology. What Skopians remember most about Čento is its recent winery: Chateau Kamnik. The wines produced here are not the best in the country, but the owners also own a fine hotel-restaurant. This one is well placed to enjoy Skopje while being in nature. Today's Čento was founded by Bosnian refugees from Hasanbegovci in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1884. When North Macedonia gained independence in 1991, it was renamed in honor of Metodija Andonov-Čento (1902-1957). A native of Prilep, he was a great defender of Macedonian identity in the face of the Yugoslav and Bulgarian authorities, and died under torture in prison.
