Patan, 130 km north of Ahmedabad, was the capital of the Chavda dynasty, then of the Chaulukya (or Solanki) dynasty in medieval times, and finally of the Gujarat Sultanate from 1407 to 1411. A major commercial crossroads, the city features numerous Hindu and Jain temples, mosques and dargahs (mausoleums), and twelve darwajas (gates). The city lies along the Saraswati River. In addition to the Rani Ki Vav, the city's Unesco World Heritage monument, travellers will be inspired to visit the imposing Old Market, the city's lungs, which is said to have existed since the reign of the Vâghelâ dynasty in the 13th century.
