Gandhinagar is located 23 km north of Ahmedabad. Dating from 1960, the present capital of Gujarat was named after the Mahatma (meaning the Great Soul). Its planning was conceived by two Indian urban planners who had studied and collaborated with Le Corbusier, the famous architect who had created the new city of Chandigarh. The city, which is divided into numbered sectors, may be an interesting visit for the architecture enthusiast, but is of little interest to the Lamba traveler. The pink sandstone Akshardham temple, dedicated to Swaminarayan, is still an architectural curiosity that deserves a visit.
