The last village on Lake Prespa in Northern Macedonia before reaching Greece, Dolno Dupeni will soon no longer be the "hole"(dupeni) its name suggests. Thanks to the Prespa agreement signed in 2019, it will once again become a crossing point between Greece and North Macedonia. In recent years, the situation had been surreal: North Macedonia had created a border post with a paved road, customs officers, a fence and a large flag, but on the Greek side, there was nothing but scrub covering a road that had been closed since 1967. Tourists had become accustomed to taking photos of themselves in front of this ubiquitous scene. Clearance work in Greece was well underway by the time of our last visit. This means that we'll soon be able to make a complete circuit of the two lakes (145 km) via the border crossings of Kapshtica-Krystallopigis (Greece/Albania) and Stenje-Gorica (Albania/North Macedonia). In the meantime, you can enjoy Dolno Dupeni. The village is small but pretty, with a few shops, two restaurants and accommodation. But Dupeni's beach is rather drab and a bit muddy.
