Nestled in a beautiful, narrow valley in the Šar Mountains, Vejce is a remote Albanian stronghold, but popular for its trails to Mount Kobilica and Black Peak. The village is home to a few tradesmen and craftsmen, including a family who produce the çifteli, a traditional Albanian musical instrument, a kind of small, long-necked, two-stringed lute. But there are no hotels or official accommodations on site. However, the small local tourist agency Xplore Vicë will be a great help in finding home-stay accommodation and exploring the surrounding area. The trails are quite difficult, but the scenery is absolutely magnificent. Vejce was also the site of the deadliest attack by Albanian insurgents of the UÇK-M during the 2001 civil war: eight members of the police and army special forces were killed near the village on April 21, 2001.
