This village is one of the most isolated in the Šar Mountains. It's famous for its old Albanian traditions and hiking trails leading to three glacial lakes at over 2,000 m altitude near Kosovo: Lake Karanikola, "Little Gjol" (Мал Ѓол/Mal Gjol, Gjolit Vogël) and "Black Gjol" (Црн Ѓол/Crn Gjol, Gjolit të Zi). Living conditions here are difficult, especially in winter. The village has recently been linked by an asphalt road, but it has lost over 80% of its population since 2002. Nevertheless, it continues to come alive every year with an "Illyrian festival" (in May) and still boasts shops, restaurants and guesthouses, thanks in part to the Dutch-based non-governmental organization CNVP, which is active in environmental protection, forest enhancement and rural tourism development.
