The Civil War and the natural gas industry boom are part of the history of this small town, as is the E.W. Thompson Drug Company, the oldest surviving pharmacy in Louisiana, founded in 1873. It is one of the few places where you can buy medicine and eat a burger all in one place. Following Route 17 north, we arrive at Poverty Point Reservoir and its state park. Here you can spend the night in a stilted cabin or book a room at the Mansion at Red Hill. North of the reservoir is the Black Bear Golf Club, a member of Louisiana's Audubon Golf Trail.
