Founded in 1854, Greytown (Te Hūpēnui in Māori) is named after Governor George Grey, governor of New Zealand from 1845 to 1854 and again from 1861 to 1868, and a central figure in the New Zealand wars between Māori and pākehā in the mid-19th century.It won the award for "most charming small town in New Zealand" in 2017.Located an hour's drive from Wellington, it is a popular weekend destination, as the weather is often milder on this side of the Remutaka.Greytown is known for its many charming little stores, making it a great destination for unusual and original shopping.
