The vast Pallister Bay lies east of Wellington and south of Featherston and Martinborough. Often the subject of a day trip to the remote Cape Palliser, its famous fur seal colony and its famous lighthouse at the top of a flight of 250 steps. Lake Ferry, a small village on the shores of Lake Onoke, which flows directly into the sea, is a classic stop on this short road trip. Another stop not to be missed: the Putangirua Pinnacles, limestone ridges eroded by the heavy rains of the last 120,000 years, an unusual and slightly unreal setting that was used in the Lord of the Rings . Hint: "The way is closed".
