A small town of 2,300 people, Featherston is located between the Tararua Range to the north, the Remutaka Range to the southwest and Lake Wairarapa to the south, making it the major crossroads of the region. The first settlers came here in the 1840's and named their town Burlings, after a local hotelier, before giving it its present name in 1856, after the provincial government superintendent. When the road from Wellington was laid out, it became one of the main stops for the stagecoach. The arrival of the railroad later led to its development, making it possible for people working in Wellington to move there
