Palmerston North, or "Palmy" to its friends, is located on the banks of the Manawatū River, on land purchased from the Māori in 1864. It is the sixth largest city in New Zealand, very student and multicultural. However, it is not very touristy and its main attraction remains its strategic location on the north-south axis of the island However, there are some great walks to do in the area, including the Manawatū gorge, an 11km walk (22km round trip) through the forest and leading to the river. In town, the Victoria Esplanade gardens, the Te Manawa museum and the rugby museum are good attractions if you want to linger for a few days
