Sometimes spelled Wanganui to better fit the pronunciation. Indeed, in this region, the "wh" is pronounced "w", not "f", as in the rest of Aotearoa. Built on the river of the same name and close to the Tasman Sea, this city is known for the national park that borders it. The mild climate and abundant food encouraged the Polynesians to settle in the area in large numbers upon their arrival. The Europeans did the same in 1830, during the colonization, which caused many land conflicts with the local populations. Its downtown area has some beautiful buildings and interesting attractions.
