Masterton, the main town in the Wairarapa region, was not occupied by Europeans until 1854. The town was named after Joseph Masters, founder of the Wairarapa Small Farms Association. The late development of the area was due to the Remutaka Range dam east of Wellington. A road was opened in the 1850s, followed by rail a few decades later. Masterton is home to the Golden Shears, the largest sheep shearing competition in the world where the most successful shearers compete for the crown of Shearing King. Typically, this event is held in late March every year.
