Salenstein, on the southern bank of the Untersee in Canton Thurgau, may be just a passing point on your route. However, the town is home to a historically significant property. Arenamberg, on which a castle was built as the last home of the Dutch queen Hortense de Beauharnais (1806-1810). Adopted daughter and sister-in-law of Napoleon I, she was also the mother of Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, who became the first President of the Republic in 1848, then Emperor of the French under the name of Napoleon III in 1852. Transformed into a museum, the site can be visited all year round.
