With around 23,000 inhabitants, it is the capital of Thurgau. The old part of the town, overlooking the river Murg, is the place to see and visit. In the old town, there are some beautiful old houses on Freiestrasse and Zürcherstrasse, as well as on Bankplatz. The former bailiff's castle houses the history museum, which tells the story of the region since prehistoric times. The Ittingen Carthusian monastery with its remarkable 17th-18th century buildings is not to be missed. The most interesting of these is the baroque church dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. There is also a small museum dedicated to monastic life.
