The small town of 7,400 inhabitants belongs to the Tagus basin. Its castle, built at the beginning of the 13th century, has kept part of its ramparts and its keep. Unique in Spain, the latter is flanked by eight turrets (as opposed to the usual four). The church of San Andrés (14th century) is a fortress-church with gothic elements. The Casa de la Tercia (16th century) was the residence of the Grand Commanders of Castile. Finally, the convent of Nuestra Señora de Lepanto (16th century) was built at the request of Luis de Requesens, after the victory of the Battle of Lepanto (1571). The castle, the church of San Andrés and the Casa de la Tercia are linked by tunnels.
