Like Toledo, this provincial capital of some 55,000 inhabitants has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beauty and interest of its old town is obvious. To visit its narrow streets, cathedral, churches and contemporary art galleries, you'll need to be in good shape, as the city was built on a hill. A visit to the Gothic-Norman cathedral and the cliff-hanging houses are two of the city's major attractions. Its wealth is due to the wool trade and textile industry during the Renaissance. The town's medieval appearance and the beauty of its natural surroundings attracted many Spanish artists: the painter Antonio Saura, the collector Antonio Pérez, the architect Zavala and many others. The city's abstract art foundations and museums make it an essential cultural stopover, where modernity and history contrast.
