Aranjuez lies 47 km south of Madrid, on the banks of the Tagus River. Its castle and gardens make it a refreshing oasis amidst the heat of the Castilian Meseta. The town was founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the Order of Santiago settled here, and it was the Catholic Monarchs who incorporated it into the royal patrimony. The building of palaces and gardens began under the kings of the House of Austria and continued under the Bourbons. But its real period of splendor came in the second half of the 18th century with Charles III and Charles IV.
