Chinchón is home to 12,000 inhabitants. Its superb medieval square, with its irregular shapes and 2-3 storey houses, was the setting for the coronation of Philip V in 1706. Nearby, the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church (16th-19th centuries) fell victim to Napoleon's troops in 1808 and was rebuilt in 1828. Here you can admire a work by Goya from 1812: La Asunción de la Virgen. Other nearby buildings include the Convent of the Poor Clares (17th century), the Clock Tower, restored in the 19th century, and, to the south of the town, the ruins of Chinchón Castle (15th-16th centuries), also destroyed by French troops in 1808.
