The Ras al Khaimah desert lies to the south of the emirate's capital. Made up of small dunes, it lacks the splendour of the Rub al-Khali desert and its 150-metre-high dune waves, but has the merit of being very close to the city. Within the sea of sand lies the al Wadi desert, where the Ritz-Carlton has taken up residence, as well as a Bedouin camp and a camelodrome. It's a wonderful way to experience a different kind of silence, one that's not disturbed by the lapping of ripples in the green mangroves, nor by the wind rushing through the canyons of the nearby arid mountains: this one is a deafening silence.
