Sharjah, whose name means rising sun, was for a long time the Gulf's most flourishing port, thanks to trade, fishing and the pearling industry. As early as 1932, the city became a stopover for the British Air Mail and Imperial Airways on their way to India and Australia. Today, Sharjah is the most cultural city in the Emirates, with its restored old quarters, some twenty museums, numerous universities, Book Fair, Contemporary Art Biennale and Architecture Triennial. It was even declared Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998 and World Book Capital in 2019.
