Welcome to the Masopolitans. That's what the 3,300 inhabitants of this Doller Valley town, the canton's administrative center, call themselves. First mentioned in the 13th century, Count Mason's construction of a castle on the heights of the Schlossberg gave Masevaux its letters of nobility. Since then, Masevaux has experienced an eventful history, with successive wars, Austrian, English and German occupations, before finally becoming French once and for all in 1944. Of particular note is the name of Conrad Alexandre Gérard, a Masopolitan born in 1729 who became France's first ambassador to the United States.
