The name of this small town of 8,500 inhabitants is associated with a lord, Mendo Curvus, who built a castle here after the Reconquista. In the 15th century, Torre became an important trading centre between the lands north of the Douro River and the wine-growing area of the Beirra Alta. Then, in the 18th century, silkworm cultivation replaced flax cultivation, which was already well established in the area. Finally, in the 19th century, mining led to the discovery of one of the largest national iron deposits. To see: the imposing church of Our Lady of the Assumption, in the Mannerist style, and the church of the Misericorde, in the Renaissance style.
