The Côa Valley is unique in that it boasts open-air rock art dating from the Palaeolithic, over 25,000 years ago, to protohistory. The collection that stands out most is that of the Upper Paleolithic, which corresponds to the first artistic expression in the history of mankind. The village of Vila Nova de Foz Côa (population 3,300) can be reached via the beautiful N222, which follows the curves of the Douro. In the town square stands the Igreja Matriz, dressed almost entirely in white, with an attractive Manueline-style door and columns inside. It's well worth a stop.
