Roman since the 2nd century B.C., it has preserved the fortifications of the probable camp of the imperial legions, as well as some sections of Gothic walls and the ancient gates of the Knights and the Soar (15th and 16th centuries). Mentioned as the city of origin of the legendary Viriato, the Lusitanian equivalent of our Vercingetorix, it was also the birthplace, in the 16th century, of the Oficina de Viseu, an important school of painting led by Grão Vasco. Viseu has a sublime historic centre with a succession of noble residences and, on the outskirts, a commercial complex with, among other things, the only permanent ice rink in Portugal
