The name Igornay means two rivers. Prehistoric tools and weapons discovered on the hills of the commune translate its past. While oil shale was discovered in 1813, the first extraction seems to have started in Igornay in 1824. At the edge of the Arroux, the castle of Igornay shelters today a farm and dwellings and is not visited. Only three of the seven towers remain of this building whose first traces go back to the 12th century. During a walk in the village, the visitor can also discover the water mill.
