The park, with its 91,745 ha, was founded in 1973. The forests of pine and silver birch stretch across the Gauja Valley, a legacy of the Ice Age, with its preserved flora and fauna, archaeological sites and numerous winter and summer activities. This park is a paradise for nature lovers Its territory extends from the town of Sigulda, which dominates the park and is its main gateway, to the town of Valmiera, passing through Cēsis in the middle. The region has always been a favourite place of meditation for Latvian nationalist romantics and artists
