A trip to Zemgale must necessarily include a visit to the beautiful Rundāle Palace. Twelve kilometres west of Bauska (on the road to Eleja), this jewel of 18th-century Baroque architecture is the work of the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Around the palace, a formal garden welcomes visitors who wish to enjoy the beauty of the place. From May to September, the caretaker's house, an outbuilding located in the palace grounds, hosts temporary exhibitions related to gardening and the laws governing a formal garden. A good restaurant in the palace cellars is also available to visitors.
