On the banks of the Daugava River, southeast of Rīga, on the "Moscow Road", you can visit the Salaspils Memorial, dedicated to the victims of Nazism. In this concentration camp, about 23,000 people are believed to have been imprisoned. (The number of victims varies according to sources.) Among the Latvians, Belarusians, Poles, Czechs, Austrians, Dutch and Germans who died in Salaspils, many were children. Huge statues and a museum have been erected in their memory in the park, near the old barracks and gallows. Take the train to Ogre, Lielvārde or Aizkraukle, and get off at Dārziņi station.
