Considered Latvia's Côte d'Azur, Jūrmala ("the shore" in Latvian) is a succession of fifteen small fishing villages brought together administratively in 1959. Located 25 km west of Rīga, Jūrmala stretches over a 30-km strip of land, between its long white sandy beaches, dunes and pine forests, and the Lielupe River that runs all the way along the coast. Jūrmala has been known since the 18th century as a spa resort renowned for the mineral richness of its waters. Even today, the Latvian "Saint-Tropez" attracts locals who come to spend the day or simply their vacations here.
