Now an industrial center, it has retained the appeal of its Baroque architecture and the creations of Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, including the Palace of the Dukes of Courland. The Cathedral of St. Simon and St. Anne is another jewel built by the Italian architect at the request of Catherine II. It was the first Orthodox church built on the territory of the Duchy of Courland-Zemgale. Jelgava also boasts two Lutheran churches: the Church of St. Anne, built in 1638, and the Church of the Holy Trinity. In the cemetery of the former, an oak tree was planted in 1883 to commemorate Luther's four-hundredth birthday.
