Only 50 kilometres north of Taitung, Chishang is attracting more and more tourists who come to discover the local speciality: rice cultivation, a legacy of Japanese colonisation. Chishang's rice paddies stretch as far as the eye can see and offer enchanting landscapes, which are usually explored by bicycle. Chishang is also a centre of aboriginal culture: its first occupants belong to the Makatao tribe, driven from their ancestral land in the south of the island by Chinese settlers in the 19th century
