Benavente was founded when foreign settlers moved to the left bank of the Tagus River, on land deserted by the Moors. A quiet town in the heart of the Lezíria do Tejo, a vast and extremely fertile plain, where wild horses and bulls are bred, essential to the most important show of the region, bullfighting, which in Portugal is practiced in the saddle and without killing. The Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve, with its superb interpretation area (EVOA), is located in the municipality. The most famous breeders and stables of the region can be found there
