On the edge of the Tyrol, 15 kilometers from Kufstein and close to the Bavarian border, Erl is one of the oldest villages in the Inn Valley. Surrounded by natural beauty, it is also a cultural and musical stopover with its Tiroler Festspiele, a music festival held every July featuring open-air concerts and operas. Erl's landmark building is the modern Passionspielhaus, which hosts the "Passion of the Christ" every 6 years: some 600 amateur actors re-enact the biblical episode, a tradition that has endured in Erl for over 400 years.
