Nicknamed the "Galapagos of the Caribbean", Mona Island is the third largest island in the Puerto Rico archipelago after Vieques and Culebra. If you are a fan of off-the-beaten-path adventures, this is the destination for you. An ecological reserve managed by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA), it is completely uninhabited, although police and DRNA guards are always patrolling the island. It also attracts many biologists who come to conduct research. Halfway between the Puerto Rican coast and the Dominican Republic, it will take you a few hours of sailing to reach the coast of Isla Mona, 66 km from Mayagüez. Very few travelers have the chance to visit Mona and the capacity of the reserve limits visits to 100 people simultaneously. It is the largest site of Taino vestiges that Puerto Rico can offer, you will admire the few petroglyphs on the rocks. While camping, you will marvel at the biodiversity, the limestone cliffs and the coral reefs that the island has to offer.
