A two-hour drive southeast of San Cristobal, Comitán is a small town whose pleasant, recently renovated center includes a few buildings that recall its brilliant colonial past: the town was founded in the early days of the conquest of Chiapas by Dominican monks (1528), on a pre-Hispanic town that itself dates back to the classical period. No doubt they will have been seduced by the local climate: at 1,665 meters, it is a rather temperate climate compared to the lowlands and highlands of Chiapas. It is an important communication hub for travelers heading to the Lagunas de Montebello and further to Palenque via the border road along the Reserva de la Biósfera Montes Azules, or for those wishing to reach Guatemala via the border post of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc. Whatever your itinerary, you will also pass by to visit the sites of interest located in its surroundings: the Chiflón waterfalls, the Chukumaltic cenote or the archaeological zone of Tenam Puente
