This Tzotzil village is located on the road to Simojovel, about an hour from San Cristobal. It played a crucial role in the Zapatista uprising, as it was here in 1996 that the San Andrés Accords were signed, granting autonomy and recognition of rights to Mexico's indigenous population, thus putting an end to the war. The charming, leafy village is particularly famous for its Sunday market and its superb textiles (some even claim they're the finest in the country!). In San Andrés, as in many other places, most of the natives proudly wear their traditional costume.
