Located 90 kilometers from San Cristóbal de las Casas, the village of Simojovel de Allende is famous for its amber production: 90% of the amber extracted in Mexico comes from here. Founded in 1620, the village is inhabited by three ethnic groups: the Toztzils, the Tzetzals and the Zoques. The streets aren't as beautiful as in San Pedro Chenalhó, but it's still a typical village, lost in the middle of the forest and hills. And you can find raw amber at better prices than in San Cristobal. Apart from strolling around, there's not much to do here, and the village has few hotels. We'll settle for a half-day stopover.
