This hilltop Maya city, located in the centre of the Chenes region, reached its peak during the Late Classic period (750-900) but was only abandoned in the 12th and 13th centuries. The site of Tabasqueño was discovered by Teobert Maler, an Austro-German explorer who wrote the first scientific reports on the area in 1887. He named it after the owner of the nearby ranch, who was originally from the state of Tabasco. One will retain of this site the structure of the Palacio-Templo, of any beauty, originally covered with intense red paint and of an imposing peak of which it remains only one part.
