The Tzeltal village of Amatenango del Valle is located 37 kilometres south of San Cristobal. Unlike many villages in the region, which specialize in textile crafts, most women are dedicated to ceramics, including hand painted works representing the Jaguar. The manufactured parts have the particularity of being cooked according to the pre-Hispanic method, i. e. by putting them in the centre of a fire, not in a furnace, as is currently being done.
