Between Gloucester and the Welsh border lies this little-known and little-visited region, despite its many attractions. The Forest of Dean covers 110 km2 and is one of the few surviving ancient forests in England. It is the second largest Royal Forest after the New Forest, and is a favorite with walkers, especially in the magical atmosphere of Puzzlewood. In fact, the Forest of Dean was the setting for some of the scenes in the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The Wye Valley lies directly on the border with Wales and follows the river of the same name, England's fifth largest.
