A delightful village surrounded by wooded hills, it's a pleasure to stroll along the steep streets leading to the castle, built on high ground overlooking the River Wye. Crossing the bridge over the Wye, you pass from the Welsh district to the English county of Gloucestershire! The overall view of the bridge over the river and the castle on the cliff is so picturesque that many painters have sought to interpret it. Turner produced a watercolor of it in 1793, which was later reproduced as an engraving and published in travel guides. Today, this view still features on many postcards!
