Situated 20 minutes from Leon, this long 4 km long beach is still very popular with tourists. Rich Nicaraguans (mainly from Leon and Managua) have their summer homes. Thus the beach fills mainly during the Holy Week and the end of the year celebrations, the rest of the time it is almost deserted. The area is also known for artisanal extraction of marine salt. A large proportion of local communities work in saltworks, while others specialize in fishing or agriculture. The huge salt cells at the entrance to the beach are among the attractions of the beach offering a unique panorama. Surfers will find the best waves at the bocana level, at the end of the beach, where the fresh water of the estuary meets the salt water of the ocean. This is also where Salinas Grandes ends and the nature reserve Juan Venado begins. Fauna and flora become more savage, bird observation more attractive.
