The Maya site of Lamanai has been occupied since 1500 BC, and is surprisingly long-lived since, unlike other sites in the region, excavations reveal significant activity right up to the arrival of the first settlers, and even later into the 19thcentury . The site's landscape is verdant, the forest and creepers having returned to their natural place to the point of covering many of the buildings. Silence is non-existent: birds and howler monkeys make their presence felt at all hours of the day. Many local guides can be found in the nearby village of Indian church, which survives largely thanks to the tourist appeal of the ruins.
