The calm and paradisiacal setting inspired Madonna to write her famous song La Isla Bonita(Last night, I dreamt of San Pedro... Spanish Paradise) in 1986. Tourism then gradually developed, and since the early 2000s, new establishments have been opening one after the other. Many foreigners have come to make their dreams come true and open restaurants and hotels in order to establish themselves permanently on the island. American companies also own a large share of the hotels, and the island's architectural style is reflected in this. The beach is lined with resorts and buildings, some of which lack charm. Although some consider that the center of San Pedro town, with its few shopping streets and its market, has retained a more authentic aspect that immediately transports you into a vacation atmosphere. Add to this the fact that bicycles and golf carts are the only means of transport, and all that's left is a fresh fruit cocktail, topped up with a hefty shot of rum, to put all your usual worries behind you.
