The village of Mahahual was one of the first to benefit from the tourist boom on the Costa Maya, thanks to its geographical position facing the Caribbean Sea and the coral reef of Banco Chinchorro. It was equipped with a port complex to accommodate the occasional cruise ship crossing the Caribbean, whose passengers disembark for the day. Fortunately, this development has not spoiled the charm of the place. Hotels and small tourist restaurants have been set up several kilometers from the pier along the beach, but their style is not that of mass tourism since they only welcome cruise ship passengers for a few hours when they disembark. In this part of the village, which has only a few streets, including the malecón, which is exclusively pedestrian, you can enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean Sea in complete tranquillity, while tasting excellent seafood specialities. The hotels have no more than two floors. They are not all cabañas like in Tulum, but this also gives a more authentic air to the place. Moreover, the prices of the lodging, like the rates of the activities and the restaurants, are at least twice less expensive than on the Riviera Maya. It is thus necessary to take advantage of being here to carry out excursions of diving and snorkeling, more especially as it is one of the best spots of the coast to leave to the discovery of the hidden beauties of Banco Chinchorro.
