70 km west of Chetumal on the road to Escárcega, this site was visited in 1912 by the American archaeologist Raymond Merwin. Kohunlich is not the original name of the city, the ruins having been named after the English name of a logging camp, cohoon ride, which was nearby in the 1920s. The 8.5 hectare archaeological site, still far from being fully explored and cleared of the bowels of the jungle, lies in a flat area with low hills and wet valleys. It is a most pleasant walk, little visited and lost in the middle of the forest where monkeys and other mammals live.
