Twenty kilometres east of Siena, in the upper valley of the river Ombrone, it is the southernmost town in the Chianti region, where the hilly landscape tends to become that of the Sienese peaks. The town witnessed the famous battle of Montaperti: in 1260, it was here, a few kilometres away, that the Florentine army surrendered to the Palio Republic. Often topped by a westerly wind coming from the Etruscan coast, Castelnuovo Berardenga offers picturesque and peaceful alleys, a 14th century castle, a beautiful fountain in its main square, and a few trattorie where you can taste the succulent cured meats of Cinta Senese.
