Halfway between Leipzig and Chemnitz, already a little closer to Chemnitz, Rochlitz is a small town with 6 300 inhabitants, peacefully located on the quiet Mulde. It has a significant past, with a pretty Markt surrounded by historic houses and a beautiful classical city hotel (1828). It is located in a geological region where porphyry is abundant, this volcanic stone with red tones. Its quarries have made its wealth and have given the raw material to building its buildings - and to many buildings in Leipzig. Dominating the small town, the castle of Rochlitz is imposing and dates from the late Middle Ages until the beginning of the Renaissance. Painted and crépi on the majority of its facade, it unveils its beautiful red porphyry blocks but contains equally impressive, the beautiful late Gothic-Petri church in late th Century. From the castle hill, views over the Mulde and the small town are wonderful.
