Verdú is the birthplace of Saint Pierre Claver, a Jesuit priest born in 1580 and missionary in Colombia with African slaves. The municipality (1 000 inhabitants) is surrounded by small paths through the fields which once allowed access to the Foire fair from neighbouring villages. It retains its castle of the th century, around which the village was built. Beyond its defensive function, the castle used to serve the abbots of Poblet monastery when they lived in Verdú. The fortress retains Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements. The church Santa María, on horseback between Romanesque and Gothic style, which began construction in the th century, will also be missed. The Romanesque gate and the Gothic flower are the most remarkable elements of this church.
